Barcelona, Pablo Picasso’s home from 1894 to 1904, is the vibrant capital of Catalonia, with a cultural and artistic history stretching back to ancient times. Kathy Morris, director of exhibitions and collections and curator of decorative arts, will give a cultural overview of Catalonia and Picasso's Barcelona. Learn about ancient ruins, monasteries, and gothic architecture; discuss the impact of Barcelona on Picasso’s life and art; and explore modern day marvels of the city on the Mediterranean. Executive chef Steve Wilkinson will lead an introductory tasting of Spanish wines followed by dinner featuring Catalan-style seafood dishes.

Explore the Latino culture and Spanish-speaking cultures of the artists Pablo Picasso and Juan Muñoz featured in exhibitions this summer at the Clark. Friends of the Clark will travel to New York to visit El Museo del Barrio, New York’s leading Latino cultural institution, reopened in October 2009 with a newly renovated facility. Get a special look at the museum’s permanent collection with a one-hour guided highlights tour. Sarah Lees, the Clark's associate curator of European art, will provide a brief introduction to the museum on the way to New York. There will be an opportunity to visit the rest of the museum or explore the city.
$70 per person (price includes private motor coach transportation, museum admission and tour, and boxed sandwiches on the return trip). Participants can purchase lunch in New York. Register online or call 413 458 0585 by August 12.
