Homer's works have garnered various responses over the years. The terse selection here with exemplary extracts from the work's early history, from approximately the time of Clark's purchase, and from more recent writings shows the often fluctuating nature of critical favor, as well as the shifting expectations of critics and historians about the kinds of materials that merit mention. In addition, the organizers of the exhibition Winslow Homer: Making Art, Making History (curator Marc Simpson and intern Susannah Maurer) provide their own interpretations of the works and the many stories that they tell.
