Robert Sterling Clark kept diaries in which he recorded, among other things, his visits to dealers and collections (we have art-related entries from 1923 to 1945, with significant breaks). From them we learn the circumstances of his purchases, some of the choices he was faced with in forming his collection, and (on rare occasion) his responses to individual objects. All of the works for which Sterling wrote a diary entry are listed below.
