Stopped at [dealer] M. A. McDonald’s on way home—Sure enough he had 3 Winslow Homer etchings—A man in a boat netting a trout rather stiff—“The Breeches Buoy” [Life Line] & 2 fishing girls mending nets [Mending the Tears]—The two latter excellent $24 each—I took them.

Walked to Durand-Ruel’s—Showed [dealer Herbert] Elfers the two etchings by Winslow Homer[:] the “Mending Nets” [Mending the Tears] & the “Breeches Buoy” [Life Line]—He was struck by them as compositions & dramatic works of art.
