The Fountain of Love

The J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles Fragonard painted at least four versions of The Fountain of Love. In this first example, the mood is mysterious and dreamlike. Cupids flutter around a fountain overflowing with magical liquid. Two of them offer a cup to a man and woman who seem to strain against a stiff breeze as they emerge into the light from a dark and vaguely threatening grove of trees.
