Fragonard painted at least four versions of The Fountain of Love. In this first example, the mood is mysterious and dreamlike. Cupids flutter around a fountain overflowing with magical liquid. Two of them offer a cup to a man and woman who seem to strain against a stiff breeze as they emerge into the light from a dark and vaguely threatening grove of trees.
