The Road from Tivoli to Subiaco
1642
Pen and brown ink with brown wash on white paper, 214 x 313 mm
The British Museum, London

The drawing was once part of a sketchbook Claude took on his excursions through the Roman countryside. The inscription says it was made "on the road from Tivoli to Subiaco" in 1642. In the center, an artist records the view before him. On the back of the paper is a study of distant mountains that might be exactly that kind of view, drawn by Claude himself.
