Coastal View (An Artist Studying from Nature)
1639
Oil on canvas, 78.1 x 101 cm
Cincinnati Art Museum. Gift of Mary Hanna

This painting is one of Claude's rare depictions of the contemporary Italian landscape, though it does not represent any actual place. It is an idealized amalgam of some of Claude's favored motifs: a harbor with boats, a ruined castle, and majestic trees caught in the glowing light. In the foreground Claude has included an artist, recording the scene before him, a detail that adds to the picture's apparent naturalism. Claude also made an etching based on this painting.
