Bugged by Winter Free Family Event at the Clark February 21

For Immediate Release

February 02, 2007

Families will go “buggy” for the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute’s free Bugged by Winter family event on Wednesday, February 21. From noon to 4 pm, activities inspired by the Clark’s insects d’art will include entomologist led insect hikes, buggy art projects, sledding, movies, a bug slide show, quiet games, and a family gallery talk. Admission to the galleries and all activities is free during this family event.

Entomologist Matthew E. Gruwell will lead 20 minute outdoor walks on the grounds of the Clark to investigate winter bug activity. Join his expeditions at 1, 2, or 3 pm to find aquatic insects that emerge on warm sunny winter days, and which insects spend the winter under bark and under rocks. Indoors, a laptop slide show of rare bugs will offer a virtual encounter with insects from around the world.

A family gallery talk at 2:30 pm, with a focus on bugs and other flying creatures in the Clark’s permanent collection, will be the inspiration for creating your own insect art. Buggy art projects will include making bug eyes on a stick, constructing your own bug, and completing bug activity sheets.

Larger than life insects will take over the Clark’s big screen with original versions of The Fly (1950) from 12:30 to 2 pm, and Return of the Fly (1959) from 3:30 to 4:45 pm, both starring Vincent Price. The films are recommended for ages nine and up.

Quiet concentration games and puzzles with images from the Clark’s collection will be offered in the game room. Outdoors, on the Clark’s park-like grounds, sled on flying saucers (weather permitting).

The Clark is located at 225 South Street in Williamstown, Massachusetts. The galleries are open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 am to 5 pm (daily in July and August). Admission is free November through May. Admission June 1 through October 31 is $12.50 for adults, free for children 18 and younger, members, and students with valid ID.
