Clark's new Lunch-time Lecture Series Begins October 12

For Immediate Release

October 10, 2000

WILLIAMSTOWN, MA, (October 6, 2000) – A new series of lunchtime gallery talks at the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute asks, "If you could take one painting with you to a desert island, what would it be?" The Clark's new curator of education, Michael Cassin, will give his answers to that question on the second Thursday of every month, at 12:30 p.m. Each talk will focus on a single painting in the Clark collection, beginning with Renoir's Blonde Bather on October 12. All "Desert Island Picture" talks are free with gallery admission.

In order to accommodate visitors on their lunch hour, each talk will last about thirty minutes. Seating is available before or after the talk for visitors who wish to bring a bag lunch. Box lunches are also available for purchase at the Courtyard Café with advance reservations; to reserve a lunch for a "Desert Island Picture" talk, call the Courtyard Café at 413-458-2303, extension 321. The Courtyard Café also serves bagels, snacks, pastries, and beverages.

Upcoming "Desert Island Pictures" will be:

  • Gainsborough's Elizabeth and Thomas Linley on November 9;
  • Wtewael's The Wedding of Peleus and Thetis on December 14;
  • and Virgin and Child in a Landscape by the Master of the Legend of Saint Lucy on January 11.

As curator of education, Cassin directs public education for children and adults, including the school and docent program, family events, and lecture and concert programs. Before joining the Clark staff in July, Cassin was head of education at The National Galleries of Scotland and previously worked in the education department of The National Gallery, London, for ten years. Cassin has lectured widely on museum education at international conferences and has advised the Van Gogh Museum on the future of their education programs.
