Free Band Concert Series on the Clark's South Lawn Kicks Off July 4 with a Program of American Music

For Immediate Release

June 14, 2006

The sounds of bluegrass, folk, Dixieland jazz, and popular music will fill the air of the south lawn of the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute during the annual crowd-pleasing band concerts on Tuesday evenings in July. Gather your friends and family, picnics, lawn chairs, and blankets for four great evenings of summer outdoor fun. The concerts are free. Food will be available for purchase. Kicking off the series with a program of American music will be the New England Brass Quartet on Tuesday, July 4 at 6 pm.

The Fourth of July program will feature a wide variety of American music arranged especially for the trumpets and trombones of the New England Brass Quartet. Included will be selections from the musicals of Richard Rodgers, Frank Loesser and Cole Porter; marches of John Philip Sousa and Henry Filmore; Ragtime and Dixieland selections as well as patriotic songs of George M. Cohan, Irving Berlin and Stephen Foster.

The other concerts in the series will feature the Old Time Bluegrass Singers on July 11, the Woods Tea Company on July 18, and Dr. Fidgety on July 25. In the event of rain, the concerts will be held in the Clark’s auditorium.

On band concert evening the galleries remain open until 6 pm for those wishing to visit the permanent collection or the special blockbuster exhibition, The Clark Brothers Collect: Impressionist and Early Modern Paintings. This exhibition is the first to unite the masterpieces collected by Sterling Clark—works by Renoir, Monet, Homer, Sargent, and more—alongside those collected by his brother, Stephen Clark, including paintings by Hopper, Matisse, Cézanne, Hopper, and Picasso. On view through September 4, this exhibition features over 70 paintings and explores the Clark brothers’ relationship, their rivalry, and the influential but ultimately divergent roles they came to play in the arts in the United States.

The Clark is located at 225 South Street in Williamstown, Massachusetts. The galleries are open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 am to 5 pm (daily in July and August). Admission June 1 through October 31 is $10 for adults, free for children 18 and younger, members, and students with valid ID. Admission is free November through May.
