For Immediate Release

May 12, 2006

On Saturday, June 3 Jazz-age glamour and spectacular art masterpieces combine during “Puttin’ on the Ritz,” the opening celebration for the exhibition The Clark Brothers Collect: Impressionist and Early Modern Paintings at the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute. Tickets, available by reservation at 413-458-0524, are $50 per person ($40 per member). Vintage attire, white tie, or black tie encouraged for this 8 pm to midnight gala continuing the Clark’s 50th anniversary festivities.

Be among the first to enjoy this summer’s special exhibition, The Clark Brothers Collect: Impressionist and Early Modern Paintings, with a special preview just for gala attendees. This exhibition unites the masterpieces collected by Robert Sterling Clark—works by Renoir, Monet, Homer, Sargent, and more—alongside those collected by his brother, Stephen Clark, including paintings by Hopper, Matisse, Cézanne, Hopper, and Picasso. On view from June 4 to September 4, this exhibition features over 70 paintings and explores the Clark brothers’ relationship, their rivalry, and the influential but ultimately divergent roles they came to play in the arts in the United States.

Dance the night away to the jazzy sounds of the award-winning 19-piece Joey Thomas Big Band. Led by Joey Thomas, the band’s repertoire includes classic ballads by Frank Sinatra, Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman, and other big band legends. Professional dancers Daniel Michaelson and Barbara Roan will offer informal introductory lessons teaching the steps of Tango, Swing, Waltz, Cha Cha, Fox Trot, and Charleston throughout the evening.

Enjoy decadent desserts from Bruno Biagianti of Vanille in Boston, the same bakery that created the famous 238-pound 16-layer lemon-mousse birthday cake devoured at the 50th Hours weekend bash last June. Individual cakes in three varieties – fruit, nut, and chocolate – will be served along with a variety of petits fours and cookies, and giant chocolate dipped strawberries. Dessert cheeses and crisps will also be offered.

Desserts will be accompanied by selections of specialty coffee, tea, and café au lait. A full cash cocktail bar will feature drinks such as "Sterling Martinis" and "Francine Fizz Cocktails" (similar to the popular “pink lady” drink). Servers will pour Nicolas Feuillatte Brut Rosé pink champagne. All wine, champagne, beer, and soft drinks are complimentary.

The Clark is located at 225 South Street in Williamstown, Massachusetts. The galleries are open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 am to 5 pm (daily in July and August). Admission is free November through May. Admission June 1 through October 31 is $10 for adults, free for children 18 and younger, members, and students with valid ID.
