Paintings from a Private European Collection are the Focus of this Summer's Looking at Lunchtime Gallery Talks at the Clark

For Immediate Release

April 17, 2006

The next Looking at Lunchtime Gallery Talk at the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute will be held Thursday, May 11 at 12:30 pm. Kathleen Morris, the Clark’s director of exhibitions and collections and curator of decorative arts, will discuss the painting Madonna with the Rose by Simon Vouet during a half hour gallery talk. This painting, just recently placed on view, is part of a private European collection on loan to the Clark for three years. The talk and gallery admission are free.

Madonna with the Rose along with the other works of the same loan, Boy with a Roemer of Wine by Candlelight (1623) by Hendrik Terbrugghen, Saint Jerome (1630s) by Bernardo Strozzi, and Portrait of General d'Oyre (1799) by Jean-Baptiste Greuze, are the subjects of the May 11, June 8, July 13, and August 10 Looking at Lunchtime Gallery Talks.

The paintings by Vouet, Terbrugghen, and Strozzi date to the 17th century, and the addition of these three Baroque paintings to the Clark’s galleries enhances its presentation of a vital period of European painting. All three paintings reflect the wide-ranging impact of the groundbreaking style of Caravaggio. The Greuze portrait of General d'Oyre complements the Clark’s already rich holdings of late 18th and early 19th century French art, including works by Jacques-Louis David, Jean Auguste DominiqueIngres and Jean-Léon Gérôme.

The Looking at Lunchtime series is held the second Thursday of every month featuring a curator or special guest highlighting a work of art or collection at the Clark. Attendees are welcomed to purchase food from the courtyard cafe or bring a bag lunch to enjoy before or after the gallery talk.

The Clark is located at 225 South Street in Williamstown, Massachusetts. The galleries are open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 am to 5 pm (daily in July and August). Admission is free November through May. Admission June 1 through October 31 is $10 for adults, free for children 18 and under, members, and students with valid ID.
