Party Like There's No Tomorrow at "Clark After Dark: The Last Days Of Pompeii" on April 7

For Immediate Release

March 23, 2006

The Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute’s wildly-popular “Clark After Dark” quartet of winter revelries concludes Friday, April 7 with “The Last Days of Pompeii” from 8 pm to midnight.  Dust off those togas, grab your friends, and help end the series with a bang.  Tickets are $10 ($8 for members) and available at the door or by reservation at 413-458-0524.

With Vesuvius on the verge of erupting, it’s time to party like there’s no tomorrow. Challenge friends and foes to gladiator jousting in a large inflatable ring complete with gladiator garb.  The ancient game of knucklebones will provide a non-contact outlet for gladiator-like competitiveness.

Director of exhibitions and collections and curator of decorative arts Kathy Morris will explore the ornate side of Pompeii.  Learn to make fibula (decorative pieces of jewelry designed to be attached to garments), armbands, and rings using fine wire. Materials will be provided to create a mosaic of an ancient frieze.

Gallery talks will focus on the paintings The Bay of Naples with Vesuvius in the Background by Pierre-Auguste Renoir and The Women of Amphissa by Lawrence Alma-Tadema, and the sculpture Bacchus and Ariadne by Jules Dalou. The Clark’s galleries will be open until midnight offering late-night rendezvous with these and other masterpieces in the collection.

The dance floor will barely contain the high energy pumped through the sound system by DJ Kiana Green. Spartacus (1960, 184 minutes), the evening’s feature film, will be larger than life in the Clark’s auditorium.  Complimentary Mediterranean-inspired snacks as well as soft drinks will be provided.  Two cash bars will offer signature drinks.

The Clark is located at 225 South Street in Williamstown, Massachusetts.  The galleries are open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 am to 5 pm (daily in July and August).  Admission is free November through May.  Admission June 1 through October 31 is $10 for adults, free for children 18 and younger, members, and students with valid ID.  For more information, call 413-458-2303 or visit www.clarkart.edu.
