Sol Y Canto to Help Celebrate Clark Family Day, Palabras, Canciónes, Y Cuadros (Words, Songs, and Pictures), October 23

For Immediate Release

October 07, 2005

In collaboration with the “Words are Wonderful” program for Williamstown Public Schools, the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute will host Palabras, Canciónes, y Cuadros (Words, Songs, and Pictures) on Sunday, October 23 from 1 to 4 pm. Gallery admission and all activities are free during this family event. All schoolchildren (and their families) are welcome.

The Latin musical ensemble Sol y Canto will perform at 1 and 3 pm in celebration of the “Words are Wonderful” program. Bilingual and multicultural, Sol y Canto’s music features a wide variety of acoustic Afro-Latin songs and rhythms ranging from traditional to contemporary, including original folk-rooted compositions. The group has established a national reputation for its unique interpretations of Latin music, and for making this music accessible to native-Spanish speakers and non-native-Spanish speakers alike. Their 2003 release, “Twice as Many Friends/El Doble de Amigos” features celebratory bilingual children’s songs inspiring children to dance and learn.

Between the musical performances, there will be a half hour gallery talk for families starting at 2:15 pm. In keeping with the theme of the day - Words, Songs, and Pictures - the gallery talk will feature pictures, songs, and words.

Gallery activity cards in English and Spanish will be available during the day. These bilingual vocabulary cards will introduce families to paintings in the collection.

The “Words are Wonderful” program is a celebration of language promoting writing, reading, and creative self-expression across all grades in Williamstown Public Schools. Each fall the program hosts visiting children’s authors who encourage students’ creativity in the language arts.

The Clark is located at 225 South Street in Williamstown, Massachusetts. The galleries are open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 am to 5 pm (daily in July and August). Admission June 1 through October 31 is $10 for adults, free for children 18 and younger, members, and students with valid ID. Admission is free November through May.
