50th Gala Kicks Off the Clark's Anniversary Celebration and Jacques-Louis David Exhibition

For Immediate Release

May 19, 2005

Celebrate the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute's 50th anniversary with a gala under grand tents on the Clark's front lawn. The 50th Celebration Gala will be enjoyed from 7 to 10 p.m. on Friday, June 3, as part of the 50 Hours anniversary event, a weekend of around-the-clock special programming.  The evening will also draw attention to the Clark's summer exhibition, Jacques-Louis David: Empire to Exile, with David-inspired decor and a special preview of the exhibition from 10 p.m. to midnight.

Gala attendees will dine amidst flowers, gold tablecloths, and candlelight while enjoying hors d'oeuvres, a buffet dinner, and dessert provided by Moore Fine Food of Lenox.  The feast will feature several French Provencal-inspired entrees and hors d'oeuvres including grilled shrimp with lemon and rosemary, sea bass wrapped in grape leaves and smoked chicken breast Provencal. Dessert will include a bittersweet chocolate mousse with Gran Marnier, summer berries, and palmiers.  A full bar will be available as well as Sterling Clark's cocktail of choice, a blend of champagne, gin, lemon juice, and sugar, known as French 75's.

Big band sounds of the popular Nelson Riddle Orchestra will delight guests and provide music for dancing throughout the evening.

Tickets for this black tie optional gala are $200 ($150 for members) and are available by calling 413-458-0524.  The gala ticket includes admission to the after-hours party, "From the Empire to the Edge," from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m.  The later party includes a preview of the Empire to Exile exhibition and dancing to a DJ in the "New Epoch" party tent on the south lawn.  Tickets for the after-hours party may be purchased separately for $35 ($25 for members).  To order after-hours tickets call 413-458-0524.

The Clark will celebrate 50 years by opening to the public for 50 consecutive hours from 6 p.m. on Friday, June 3 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, June 5.  Activities of all sorts are planned around the clock for all ages during this anniversary celebration event. Admission to the galleries and most events is free throughout the 50 Hours. Please visit www.clarkart.edu for more details.
