MoMA Director Glenn Lowry To Speak At The Clark January 8
For Immediate Release
December 29, 2004
Glenn D. Lowry, director of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, will speak at the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute on Saturday, January 8, at 3 p.m. His talk, "Manhattan is Modern Again," will focus on the renovation of MoMA, which recently reopened to great anticipation and acclaim. Admission is $10 general admission, free to members of the Clark. Reservations are recommended; to reserve, call 413-458-0524.
Lowry has been director of MoMA since 1995. Raised in Williamstown, Lowry graduated from Williams College and holds M.A. and Ph.D degrees from Harvard University. His lecture is part of the Clark's ongoing series "Art in the World," which explores great collections of the world, art in popular culture, and other related topics.
The new 630,000 square-foot MoMA has nearly twice the capacity of the former facility. The renovation was designed by architect Yoshio Taniguchi with the goal to "transform MoMA into a bold new museum while maintaining its historical, cultural, and social context." The new design includes a lobby connecting 53rd and 54th Streets, an atrium rising 110 feet above street level, and innovative glass curtain walls that provide views of the sculpture garden. New galleries are devoted to contemporary art and new media. All of the galleries have been constructed to suit the various mediums in the Museum's collection. Building materials used include glass, granite, and aluminum.
Critics have called the new MoMA "a lustrous building"( The New Yorker), and "a near perfect marriage of modernist art and minimalist architecture" (Washington Times).
On January 19, Friends of the Clark will travel to New York to see the new MoMA. For more information on membership activities, call 413-458-0425.
The Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute is located at 225 South Street in Williamstown, Massachusetts. The galleries are open Tuesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5p.m. For more information, visit www.clarkart.edu.
