Shakespeare’s The Comedy of Errors Comes to the Clark Live in HD from London’s National Theatre

For Immediate Release

February 24, 2012

WILLIAMSTOWN, MA—The Comedy of Errors, Shakespeare’s dazzling farce of mistaken identities, comes to the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute on Thursday, March 1 at 2:00 pm, live in HD from London’s National Theatre. Tickets are $25 ($23 members and students) and may be purchased online at clarkart.edu or by calling 413 458 0524. The box office will also be open one hour before the performance, and the doors will open at 1:30 pm.

Two sets of twins who were separated at birth spend one crazy day in the same city without meeting. The day is especially confusing for Antipholus of Syracuse and his servant Dromio who, in search of their brothers, arrive in a land entirely foreign to their distant home. To the outsiders, this buzzing metropolis appears to be a place of wonderment and terror, where baffling gifts and unexplained hostilities abound. Consistently recognized by strangers, the visitors question their very selves as the turmoil escalates. Meanwhile, Aegeon, father to the Antipholus twins, has been captured searching for his sons and, as an illegal immigrant, is sentenced to death at sunset. Shakespeare’s furiously paced comedy will be staged in a contemporary world into which walk three prohibited foreigners who see everything for the first time. Lenny Henry plays Antipholus of Syracuse in this “comic delight—a savvy modern-dress production set in a recession-ravaged city” (Daily Telegraph).

The National Theatre series continues with an encore of The Comedy of Errors on March 9 and Goldsmith’s She Stoops to Conquer on March 30.

The Clark is located at 225 South Street in Williamstown, Massachusetts. The galleries are open daily in July and August (open Tuesday through Sunday from September through June), 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. Admission is free through May 31. For more information, call 413 458 2303 or visit clarkart.edu.
