Start Your Halloween Early with the Clark in the Dark Free Family Event

For Immediate Release

October 20, 2011

WILLIAMSTOWN, MA—Start your Halloween early and rouse some spirit at the Clark with an evening of events for the whole family at the Clark in the Dark free family event on Friday, October 28 from 5:00 to 9:00 pm. As part of the ClarkNOW program, we’re shaking up our traditional family day, turning the popular event into a family night and inviting families to paint on the walls of the famous Impressionist gallery to create a one-of-a-kind masterpiece mural.

The impending closing of the original white marble museum building for renovation has generated a unique opportunity for families to “make their mark” at the Clark by creating a masterpiece mural on the walls of the famous “Renoir room.” Local artists Thor Wickstrom and Jaye Fox will sketch works of art inspired by the Clark’s international tour of masterpieces on the walls of the gallery, and families can add to the sketches or paint their own masterpieces in the frames provided. Take a piece of the Clark home with you by decorating a paperweight using marble salvaged from the demolition of the former Williamstown Art Conservation building. Kids will love making 3-D Picture Boxes using images from the Clark’s collection.

What would Clark in the Dark be without fun in the dark? Members of the Williams Outing Club will lead flashlight games and the College’s Astronomy students will open your eyes to the joys of stargazing. Naturalist Dave Ackerson will awaken all your senses with a dusk hike on Stone Hill. And of course, there will be ghost stories and folktales around a campfire with Clark curators Richard Rand and Kathy Morris, and Michael Cassin, Director, Center for Education in the Visual Arts. We’ll provide the marshmallows.

In tribute to the Clark’s successful masterpiece tour, Chef Steve Wilkinson will create a food court featuring market stalls inspired by the countries hosting the tour. The family-affordable menu includes: a pasta bar with a variety of pastas, sauces, and garnishes; crepes with a selection of dessert toppings; create-your-own-tapas; maple syrup sundaes; California rolls; teriyaki chicken; Vegetarian gyoza; and pulled-BBQ pork sandwiches.

The Williams College Lacrosse team will be helping the Clark to host this event, supported by funding from the officers and employees of Allen & Company, Inc. Some events and activities have limited participation; sign in at the welcome table to obtain tickets.

The Clark is located at 225 South Street in Williamstown, Massachusetts. The galleries are open daily in July and August (open Tuesday through Sunday from September through June), 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. Admission is free November through May. Admission is $15 June 1 through October 31. Admission is free for children 18 and younger, members, and students with valid ID. For more information, call 413 458 2303 or visit clarkart.edu.
