WILLIAMSTOWN, MA—Pritzker Prize-winning architect Tadao Ando will make a special free presentation at the Clark on Tuesday, October 18 at 6:30 pm focusing on his work on the Clark’s campus expansion program. Ando designed the Clark’s Stone Hill Center, which has quickly become an iconic part of the Clark’s campus. In this special lecture, Ando will discuss his vision for the next phase of the campus expansion, which will redefine the Clark experience.
Ando is the architect of the Clark’s planned Visitor, Exhibition, and Conference Center. His work with the Clark creates a vision for the Institute’s future that allows for physical expansion, improves circulation, and dramatically expands public use of the Clark’s sweeping 140-acre campus.
His firm, Tadao Ando Architects and Associates, is based in Osaka, Japan. World-renowned for his use of concrete as a primary medium, Ando has been praised for producing serene interior spaces that invite contemplation. He has designed a number of modernist buildings that complement the natural beauty of their surroundings, including museum projects like the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, Texas; the Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts in St. Louis; and the Stone Sculpture Museum in Bad Münster am Stein, Germany. He is currently working on Abu Dhabi’s Maritime Museum.
Ando was awarded the Pritzker Prize, architecture’s most prestigious award, in 1995. He has also been honored with the American Institute of Architects Gold Medal, the Kyoto Prize for lifetime achievement and the Royal Institute of British Architects Gold Medal. Among his many other projects: Morimoto Restaurant, New York; the Palazzo Grassi for the François Pinault Collection of Contemporary Art, Venice; and the renovation of the Punta della Dogana, Venice.
The Clark is located at 225 South Street in Williamstown, Massachusetts. The galleries are open Tuesday through Sunday, 10 am to 5 pm (daily in July and August).
