The Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute to Join in Celebration of Art Museum Day on May 18

For Immediate Release

May 11, 2011

WILLIAMSTOWN, MA—The Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute will join the national observance of Art Museum Day with a day-long program of offerings highlighting both the public and the private sides of the museum. Art Museum Day is a national event organized by the Association of Art Museum Directors (AAMD) to emphasize the lasting impact of art museums on their communities, highlight the value of the visual arts in society, and provide new opportunities for audiences to participate in the wide-ranging programs that art museums offer. This year’s Art Museum Day focuses on the theme of “Museum and Memory.”

Art Museum Day programs at the Clark include a full slate of special curator-led talks exploring the many facets of the Clark's collection. Michael Cassin, Director, Center for Education in the Visual Arts, will begin the program with a gallery talk about the Clark’s sculpture collection at 10:15 am. Kathleen Morris, the Sylvia and Leonard Marx Director of Collections and Exhibitions and Curator of Decorative Arts, will lead a tour of the Clark’s porcelain collection at noon, followed by a talk with Alexis Goodin, Curatorial Research Associate, about the Clark’s silver collection at 1:00 pm. Jay A. Clarke, Manton Curator of Prints, Drawings, and Photographs, closes the series with a gallery talk about the Clark’s collection of paintings at 2:00 pm. Each talk will last approximately 45 minutes. Admission to the Clark is free through May 31.

Ever wonder how exhibitions are developed, how gallery locations are chosen, or even how to become a curator? The Clark’s curatorial team will be available on Facebook throughout the day, providing a behind-the-scenes look at museum activities and answering questions during the museum’s first-ever “Ask a Curator” event. Visit http://www.facebook.com/clarkartinstitute to join the conversation.

In celebration of Art Museum Day, the Clark will offer a 50% discount on its Contributor-level membership (a $250 value) to provide year-round access to the Clark’s galleries, special exhibitions, and events. This special one-day offer can be redeemed at the information desk by e-mailing membership@clarkart.edu or by calling 413 458 0425.

AAMD member museums—located across the United States, Canada, and Mexico—will commemorate Art Museum Day concurrent with International Museum Day organized annually by the International Council of Museums (ICOM). AAMD’s Art Museum Day is an opportunity to focus attention on the role of art museums in North America, as part of ICOM’s global celebration of museums.

“Art Museum Day is an opportunity to celebrate the collective memory of human creativity, both past and present, that art museums hold in the public trust,” said Kaywin Feldman, President of AAMD and Director and President of the Minneapolis Institute of Arts. “AAMD believes that art should be accessible and relevant to all, and we are so pleased that the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute is joining with us and the global community of museums to create new opportunities for audiences to engage with museum collections and programs.”

A comprehensive list of participating AAMD member art museums will be available in the newsroom of the AAMD website (http://www.aamd.org/newsroom/).
