A Benny Goodman Holiday Concert with the Dave Bennett Septet at the Clark

For Immediate Release

November 09, 2010

WILLIAMSTOWN, MA—The annual Williamstown Holiday Walk begins with the Dave Bennett Septet at the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute on Friday, December 3 at 8:00 pm. Clarinetist Dave Bennett and his jazz septet will perform classic Benny Goodman songs like "I've Got Rhythm," "Body and Soul," "Stompin' at the Savoy," and a selection of holiday favorites, in a special concert guaranteed to “bring the swing era back to life in all its splendor” (Michael Krajewski, Principal Pops Conductor, Houston Symphony).

The Dave Bennett Septet premiered in 2003 in Windsor, Ontario, prompting the reviewer for the Windsor Star to call Bennett "a jaw-dropping phenom on the clarinet." Bennett and his septet—including Matt Hoffman, vibraphone; Paul Keller, bass; Hugh Leal, acoustic guitar; Carol McCartney, vocalist; Peter Siers, drums; and Tad Weed, piano—have mastered the famous harmonized riffs and ensemble parts from the original Goodman recordings of the 1930s and '40s. Bennett’s penchant for wire-rim glasses, spats, and double-breasted suits “brings tremendous excitement to a performance” (Dick Hyman, Goodman Band touring pianist).

Bennett has performed with several of Goodman's band members, including vibraphonist Peter Appleyard, guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli, and pianist Dick Hyman in the United States, Canada, and Europe. The septet has performed in more than thirty states throughout the United States to sold-out houses, and has been featured on NPR and at the Bern International Jazz Festival in Switzerland.
