Hanging Figure is one of the featured works in the Clark’s current exhibition of Muñoz’s sculpture. During his twenty-year career, Muñoz (1953–2001) invented a mode of storytelling using objects that inspire new ways of relating to space, memory, and displacement. His first sculptures employed an architectural language of disappearance and loss—wood banisters in unused spaces and metal balconies estranged from buildings. Though early in his career Muñoz used an architectural vocabulary to tell stories about people, he turned his focus to the human body in the late 1980s. Hanging Figure—which references Edgar Degas’s famous painting of an acrobat, Miss La La at the Cirque Fernando, Paris (1879)—alludes to similar gestures in other works, such as the hanging figures in Francisco de Goya’s Disasters of War series. This unique installation within the Clark's permanent collection gallery draws intriguing connections between the works of modern masters and their predecessors.
The exhibition, Juan Muñoz, currently on view at the Clark’s Stone Hill Center through October 17, was curated by Carmen Giménez, Stephen and Nan Swid Curator of Twentieth-Century Art at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, with independent curator David Breslin for the Clark.
