Dance Performance, Kids' Activities Part of the Fun atClark Family Day March 1
For Immediate Release
February 20, 2003
A performance by African dance ensemble Kusika is one of the highlights of an afternoon of family fun on Saturday, March 1, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m., at the Clark Art Institute. The family day, celebrating the exhibition Renoir and Algeria, will also include a gallery talk, drawing lessons from a live model, dress-up photos, and craft activities. Admission is free.
The theme of the afternoon is the portraits of French Impressionist artist Pierre Auguste Renoir. At 1:00 p.m., curator of education Michael Cassin will lead a gallery talk exploring Renoir' portraits. At 2:00 p.m., children may try their own hand at portraiture.
Kusika will invite children to participate in traditional African dance, music, and storytelling in the auditorium at 3:00 p.m. Kusika is a joint program of the Williams College music and dance departments and includes students and community members.
Throughout the afternoon, children will have the opportunity to make stick puppets and other crafts. A self-guided tour for children and adults will also be available. Kids may also have their picture taken in a "Renoir portrait," dressed up as "Monsieur Fournaise" or "Mademoiselle Fleury in Algerian Costume."
The program is the first of two family days offered in connection with Renoir and Algeria. On Saturday, April 5, the focus will be on Renoir's still life and landscape painting.
Renoir and Algeria is the first exhibition devoted to the Algerian subjects inspired by Renoir's trips to the French colony in 1881 and 1882. Seventeen paintings by Renoir, as well as a selection of travel postcards and photographs, are included in the exhibition, on view through May 11.
The Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute is located at 225 South Street in Williamstown, Massachusetts. The galleries are open Tuesday through Sunday, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Gallery admission is free through May. For more information call 413-458-2303 or visit www.clarkart.edu.
