For Immediate Release

December 11, 2002

The Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute's latest acquisition, Laundresses in a Landscape by François Boucher, will go on public view for the first time on Saturday, December 14. The oil on canvas, the first painting purchased by the Institute since 1999, was acquired in November.

Laundresses in a Landscape was painted in 1760 and exhibited by the French rococo artist at the Paris Salon of 1761. The oil on canvas measures 19 7/8 by 24 inches and depicts a young man spying on laundresses in the foreground. A screen of trees interspersed with rocks, fallen logs, and branches surround a pond or river deep in the forest.

The Clark Art Institute is located at 225 South Street in Williamstown, Massachusetts. The galleries are open Tuesday through Sunday, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (closed Christmas and New Year's Day). Admission is free through June 13.
