A Walk in the Country: Inness and the Berkshires
This exhibition is first to focus exclusively on George Inness's relationship with the Berkshires. Like many artists and writers, Inness, one of the most prominent American landscape artists of the nineteenth century, was drawn to the Berkshires as a center of cultural and intellectual life. Inness took Berkshire County as a subject of numerous paintings from the 1840s and 1850s, and enjoyed the patronage of famous "Berkshire cottage" owners such as Catharine Sedgwick and Henry Ward Beecher. Inness idealized his Berkshire scenes to create a sense of timeless and spiritual meaning.
