"Inside Outside" Program November 2 opens Kids' Eyes to a Building's Inner Workings
For Immediate Release
October 11, 2002
Kids of all ages can explore architecture-related "inside and outside" in a family program on Saturday, November 2, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Clark Art Institute. In an afternoon of family activities celebrating the current exhibition Tadao Ando: Architect, children (and accompanying adults) will learn about the imaginative and practical processes that go into making and experiencing buildings. Activities include hands-on model building, a behind-the-scenes slide presentation on the Clark, a gallery talk, and a self-guided tour to help parents with kids focus on the topic. Admission is free.
At 1:00 p.m. a gallery talk by curator of education Michael Cassin will look at the relationship of space and light inside and outside of buildings. The talk will feature paintings such as Claude Monet's Rouen Cathedral, the Façade in Sunlight, Edouard Manet's Interior at Arcachon, and John Singer Sargent's A Venetian Interior.
At 2:30 p.m., the slide show "Tip of the Iceberg" will show some of Ando's work, other buildings, and parts of the Clark not generally open to the public. In addition to showing how the different parts of a building work together to make a whole, this experience will show the hidden parts of the Clark seldom seen by most visitors.
All afternoon, kids and their parents will create their own model buildings with cardboard, modeling clay, pipe cleaners, and other materials. Light refreshments will be served.
Tadao Ando: Architect was organized by the St. Louis Art Museum. The installation is designed by Tadao Ando Architect and Associates, the architect chosen to design the Clark's new building and campus enhancement. The exhibition focuses on Ando's most accomplished projects of the past twenty-five years and features peep-hole replicas of Ando's interiors, drawings, and scale models of his creations worldwide.
The Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute is located at 225 South Street in Williamstown, Massachusetts. The galleries are open Tuesday through Sunday, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Admission is free through May. For more information call 413-458-2303 or visit www.clarkart.edu.
