Landscape Architects Reed-Hilderbrand to Speak February 1

For Immediate Release

January 16, 2002

Landscape architects Douglas Reed and Gary Hilderbrand of Reed-Hilderbrand Associates will speak at the Clark Art Institute on Friday, February 1, at 5:30 p.m. The Watertown, MA, firm was recently selected as landscape architects for the Clark's campus expansion and enhancement project. They will discuss their previous projects and relate them to the plans for the Clark site. The talk and reception to follow are free and open to the public; reservations are requested by January 25. To reserve, call 413-458-2303, extension 370.

Reed and Hilderbrand have worked on a number of projects in western New England, including Simon's Rock College of Bard in Great Barrington, residential work in Richmond, and Bennington College. Their work in the Berkshires has consistently emphasized the area's rural character, including the types of ponds, trails, meadows, and scenic vistas found on the grounds of the Clark. Other notable and relevant projects designed by Reed-Hilderbrand include the Parrish Art Museum in Southampton, NY; the Taft Museum in Cincinnati; and the New Shrub and Vine Collection at the Arnold Arboretum at Harvard University.

Chosen for their ability to integrate responsible care for the land with the needs of modern life, Reed-Hilderbrand will work closely with design architect Tadeo Ando on the Clark expansion. In addition to the new facility designed by Ando, the plan calls for new hiking and biking trails through the Clark's 140 acres of woodlands and meadows, as well as gardens and other enhancements to a landscape that serves as a recreational park for the community.

The Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute is located at 225 South Street in Williamstown, Massachusetts.  The galleries are open Tuesday through Sunday, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Admission is free through May.  For more information call 413-458-2303 or visit
