Design Team

The Clark has chosen a distinguished group of architects to collaborate on the campus expansion.

Tadao Ando is the architect of the new Visitor, Exhibition and Conference Center and the already completed Stone Hill Center (2008). The selection of Mr. Ando was influenced by his other work in pristine rural settings, where he has created modernist buildings that complement the natural beauty of their surroundings. He is also known for producing serene interior spaces that invite contemplation, all in keeping with the ambience for which the Clark is known. Mr. Ando was awarded the prestigious Pritzker Architecture Prize in 1995. He is the architect of the Museum of Modern Art in Fort Worth, Texas as well as the Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts in St. Louis, Missouri.

Selldorf Architects are the designers for the renovations of the original 1955 Museum Building and the Manton Research Center. Led by principal Annabelle Selldorf, the firm was selected because of their extensive experience with both historical renovations and spaces for art as evidenced in the acclaimed Neue Galerie in New York which they completed in 2002. The Clark sought a seamless renovation that would harmoniously blend the old and new spaces.

Reed Hilderbrand Associates, landscape architects for the campus expansion bring a unique approach to each project that is derived from a cultivated awareness of each site's history and special character. Their work in the Berkshires region, notably at Bard College at Simon's Rock in Great Barrington and Bennington College in Vermont, has consistently focused on the area’s rural character, including the types of ponds, trails, meadows, and scenic vistas found on the grounds of the Clark.

Gensler, executive architect, is an international architecture, planning and design practice with 33 offices in the United States, Europe, Asia and South America. Based in the New York office, Madeline Burke-Vigeland, principal-in-charge of the Clark project, has served in a similar capacity for the New Museum, the New York Public Library, the International Center of Photography and Christies in New York.
